yeah so so you're actually voting to have union representation and this is an existing union not a not a brand new one or is it a brand new one is an existing new is existing union and and. while you get to have a democracy in the workplace that's a pretty impressive thing do you think that most of the people who are out on the streets today are looking for you know just a better paycheck or that they would like to be members of unions as well. you know they also want to be represented by the union. you know because. because you know it's sometimes in workplaces you don't get to treat them correctly sometimes manager the boss my to suspect you just because you're working and if you did to stand up you'd probably get fired and that's not so it's a matter of having having a voice in the workplace and being able to to work and behave with integrity and know that you're not going to be capriciously fired it makes a lot of sense won compas thank you so much for being with us tonight. great to have you on the program to get involved in the fight for higher wages and better working conditions

. >> got to a point where the modern unionizing schemes unions doesn't call themselves unions anymore. in the case of new york city they launched a campaign to try to unionize the fast food restaurant. they didn't call it the fast food restaurant unsions, they called it fast food forward. at this point i think unions are finally realizing that their brand is so toxic that they actually need to start rebranding themselves because frankly they haven't been willing or capable to actually adjust to a 21st century economy. they are stuck in the 1950s, and they want 1950s policies to return, return to protectionism and a whole slew of other policies that will hurt our economy so at this point they are sort of like becoming, well, almost extinct. >> what about that? are you stuck in the 1950s? >> absolutely not, and i think maybe just season in a little bit of a delusional stage here because unions in fact are the key right now in this weak economy. it's what we need. >> key to putting people out of work? you just put 18,000 people out of work. >> i didn't interrupt you. the key to balancing

with unions and companies and cbos we needed to develop a more cohesive hiring process and that is what we worked on. we had a success story working closely with the carpenter's union, where we have two returning veterans, i think from afghanistan, to essentially pre-screened through a community-based organization -- out of a group of 75 possible veterans through a craigslist ad and got them in for an interview. liked their attitude, their demeanor, their work ethic. they are both former marines and hired them into -- actually sponsored them and they went into the carpenter training pre-apprenticeship program and they could have skipped that and gone right in as an apprentice, but they wanted to see if they really liked the carpenter program. so this is a replicable hiring program that we're going to try to push out and we have been pushing out to other employers, other subcontractors on this project, as well as the construction industry in general. i think it's important to note that it's not just about hiring veterans. it's about retention. and making sure that they succeed. and so on
